giving thanks

November 22nd, 2008

Hey All,

So I was thinking about thanksgiving…time to spend with your friends and or family, to watch football or to get nostalgic and to let’s face it, pig out.  Like I said before, its okay to take a day off and to indulge every once and awhile.  So take the day to relax with your freinds and enjoy the day.  But before you eat so much that your pants split, stop and think.  Give thanks for the ones that love you, for the food that you have for the goods and the bads.  And before you complain about having to eat well or exercise give thanks that you can.  There are so many people that don’t have food at all or can’t walk even if they wanted to.  After all the cooking and running around, sit and enjoy your meal, enjoy your loved ones, enjoy your rest, physically and emotionally.  Use this thanksgiving to take a deep breath……. :)

you’ve made it

Give yourself a pat on the back if you made it through Halloween without pigging out on candy.  If you did over indulge, no fear, just get back into your routine.  As a fitness professional I will advise you to be active everyday.  But let’s be realistic, no one expects you to be perfect.  So, if you stumble get up and try again.  Don’t get discouraged and give up.  Stay positive and move forward.  It is perfectly okay to give yourself a break every now and then, just remember don’t take too many days off or you may lose your momentum! :)

It’s Halloween in Hollywood

September 30th, 2008

Halloween is around the corner and the temptation to eat candy is here.  It starts early. You know the routine, you buy a bag for”the trick or treater’s” and you end up having to go out and buy more because the bag is gone before the 15th of Oct.  I know, It’s everywhere, at the grocery store, at the gas station, at the drug store, there are those cute little candy corns and all of our other favorite treats dressed in orange and black.

So what is so bad about a little sugar?  Why should you opt for natural sugars instead of added? Well, a medium apple for instance has 15g of sugar, the same as 3 teaspoons of sugar from the sugar bowl.  The difference is that the added sugar goes into your bloodstream immediately.  If you don’t use up that energy within 2 or 3 minutes it will be put into your fat deposit. The sugar from the apple takes a few hours to get to the bloodstream, and you have a few hours to use the energy.

So unless you have just gotten off the football field for a quick mini snickers before you go back into the game, you probably won’t be burning those cute little candies off.  So this year try to stay on track, don’t buy the candy until the night before, and opt for more healthy snacks the rest of the month.  Don’t let the treats trick you this year, they are the same empty calories, just dressed differently.

Get up LA

September 20th, 2008

So people are always asking me how much exercise they should be doing, how many days a week and for how long?  Well peeps there is nothing magic about being healthy.  You just need to be active everyday.

Now before you freak out, remember that being active doesn’t mean that you need to be on the treadmill for an hour.  It just means you need to move.  Yeah, like get out and go for a walk around the neighborhood with your dog.  Go to the park and shoot some hoops with your kids, anything, just get up and go.

There are millions of things you can do and already do.  Did you know that a 150lb person can burn 270 calories just doing laundry and burn 222 calories raking the yard?  So all those chores that you loath can actually help you stay fit.  Now don’t forget that you need to get your heart rate up there to get the cardiovascular benefits and to really take the weight off,  but why not get started on your road to health with a little table tennis?  A 150lb person can burn 92 calories in just 20 minutes.  Now go out and have fun will ya.
